An acquaintance of mine has worked for a small retail clothing chain for a few years. She frequently puts in 60 hour weeks and is currently making around 8 dollars an hour as the assistant store manager.

She found out that another store assistant manager at another one of the owner's stores was on salary and making nearly double what she makes while working there for less than a year. When she brought this up with the store owner in an attempt to get a raise, he said to her that if he gave her a raise to what the other person was making than she would likely be making too much to qualify for the state benefits she receives as a single mother trying to raise three children.

Aside from it being a really scummy thing to say, are there any other ramifications to an employer using this sort of tactic in salary negotiations?
