I did this a few months back for a weekend trip and was able to rent a car with full insurance coverage for significantly lower then the price i was quoted on expedia without any insurance. If you get a nice customer service rep they might be able to give you a great deal. The sales rep also gave me a business card so that i can get the same pricing when i rent from them again in the future.
I should add that this was a down and back trip where i was a local to the area that the car was being rented in.
