I've found eBay to be a great outlet not only for finding great deals but making a little extra cash.
As far as selling, I've made over $2,000 in the past 18 months. Most of it has just been random stuff: t-shirts, small electronic items, etc. I've also unloaded a few high-priced items as well. Here's an example of one of my eBay success stories: I'm a scuba diver (expensive hobby, yeah) and last year I bought a basic underwater camera for $170. I got about 6 months of good use out of it. Eventually, I posted it on eBay for $90, it sold within a few weeks, and I put it toward a slightly fancier underwater camera that I'd had my eye on. I always set items for a fixed price with the buyer covering the shipping- no haggling, no weird Craigslist exchanges, only a simple trip to the shipping store at the end of my street. Sometimes it takes a few months, but nearly everything sells eventually. Better yet, selling on eBay scratches my anti-hoarder OCD compulsion about not accumulating things I'm not going to use. The only items that don't sell well are books. There's much money to made there either, but I post them anyway.
eBay is also great for finding deals, especially on clothes. I like clothes shopping on eBay because I can find- for example-a name-brand shirt in nearly new condition for a fraction of the retail price. Now and then, when I buy something that doesn't fit, I just re-post it for sale (usually for a few dollars more) and it usually sells pretty quickly.
Yes, there are some seller fees and eBay does take a small cut of the money you make, but overall I highly recommend it. In addition to reclaiming some value of the stuff you're not using, you can buy some nice stuff at bargain prices as well.
