I would like to mount some shelves inside my window to put plants on. I have a cat and I'm real sick of him destroying my plants so I want a place that they can be that he can't get to. I saw a really nice one using acrylic and I liked that the shelves wouldn't block the light. However, I have a couple of reservations. My window is about 3ft across and the casing is about 6 inches thick. I am hesitant to put screws through the casing because I wonder how easy it will be to patch later. It seems like even if I used wood filler you would still be able to see the holes. My other concern is that since I want to use it for plants, I'm thinking that I will need thick pieces to support the weight. Is 3ft too wide across to realistically think the shelf made of glass or acrylic would be strong enough to hold that kind of weight without a support in the middle? Here is a picture of what I had in mind. I have larger plants than her though so I'm just not sure it would hold the weight. I like the shelf inset like this because then even if the curtains are drawn the plants still get the light/ I can still hang curtains in that window for privacy.Any other ideas or modifications that you think might work for something like this? What are your thoughts on putting the screws through the casing around the window? The house was very recently remodeled and it just makes me cringe a little to do that to the pristine window casing! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2tCGb4T
