So long story short I am moving out at the end of the month and my decision is to either rent a room for about 600/month or rent my own place (basement suite) for 885. Both are an increase to what I already pay. I can afford both but I am having a REALLY hard time deciding if living alone is really worth the extra 280$/month. To put it in perspective I make (post-tax) roughly 2000$/month.
I've been living (semi) alone for about 5 years. I live with a roommate who is out of town for months at a time for work. He's buying a house in another province so that has come to an end. The problem is, I feel, since I'm older I am getting very anxious just thinking about sharing living space with random people again like I did from 18-22. While not horrible it certainly is less desirable than living my myself.I spend most of my time in my room but I love cooking. So having roommates that use up all the fridge space and leave dirty dishes and messes in the kitchen is something that will drive me crazy.
So I am looking for your general input whether to you, your sanity, if you would be willing to pay an extra 285$ to live alone (in a very nice, big place I might add, it's insane how cheap it is for how nice it is). Or, would you pay 14% (on top of), or 44%, of your monthly salary to live alone? Just from a value proposition, I want to emphasize I can afford either one.
This isn't so much as post asking for advice so much as it is on your opinion and input regarding what you would do.
