Hey everyone, I just turned 20 last week, and I've been thinking a lot of my future. For several months I was considering working less, living on less, and enjoying life all the way till I can't work anymore. I've also considered working hard at a full-time job and investing like 50% of my income so that I can retire early at 40-50. They both seem like good options, but I don't know which would be better. I've got questions for three groups of people.

From those who have worked part time most of your life and lived on very little income - how has that turned out? How relaxing is it? Do you recommend it?

From those who have gone the FI/RE route, how is early retirement? Was slaving away for 30-40 years worth it to be independent? Do you recommend it?

From everyone else, which do you think would be the better route for your life given your circumstances?

Additional information: I'm a computer science student with 2 more years of school to go. I have already worked at a company programming for 2 summers and 1 winter, and plan to work part time for during the next few semesters. I'm confident in my ability to find a job after getting my degree, and I know that software engineers make good money on average, especially those who get a degree. So my questions are not whether I am able to achieve early retirement or find a long-term part time job; instead, which of the two routes would be / have been more enjoyable to you?
