Sup /r/personalfinance,
28 yo here. I took a loan from my parents to buy an apartment. This loan is what started me on the world of personal finance. I didn't really care about money before, now I'm obsessed. The loan bugs me for some reason. I want to pay it ASAP. To do so I've been experimenting with various ways to save.
I'm already doing the usual stuff, like having a budget, bringing my own food to work, etc. However the more frugal I am, the more I want to buy something I don't need.
It's like "hey, look, you saved this much extra money this month, let's spend it" and then I spend the rest of the evening watching headphones reviews. I don't need no new headphones. I also don't need a new Macbook, yet I window shop on Apple website every second day.
I am self-concious enough not to make any stupid purchases like that, but the urge is there.
It even comes to food. The other day on my way home I was thinking about whether I should go to McDonald's on my way home. There was no reason to go there. I was almost at home, and there's food at home. But going to McDonald's felt like fun. I battled myself for a while, gave in, went to McDonald's and was very happy about it.
Yeah, I understand that I can make a budget category for 'urges', but isn't there another way? What's your experience with this?
