One of our older, retired neighbors has recently started to complain that the landscaping at our house leaves something to be desired. As we are pretty frugal, we don't want to pay for anyone to come do our yard, meaning we have to cut the grass and plant things ourselves, which let's be clear, is not really one of my main priorities and happens maybe once every other week.
We don't have a HOA (one of the reasons we bought in this area) and aren't aware that we're breaking any city codes, but this neighbor has basically gone out of her way to stir the pot and cause drama, saying she'll call the cops and get more ordinances passed, the whole nine yards. Not to mention that she's sent a few unsavory emails about people "who were not raised here" (we're first gen Americans) and went so far as to say (in a polite way) that people who act like us are typically called "trailer trash" in the south.
While we may have one of the plainer houses on the block, that's way out of line and is really upsetting to someone who just wants to live their freaking life.
Any ideas on how to convey to a neighbor that not everyone wants to blow $15k a year on landscaping and other meaningless beautification projects?
Or do we say, kindly mind your own business?
On the other hand, do you think we just need to suck it up and focus on the lawn more?
At this point I'm so shocked that I'll take any advice at all.
