tl;dr: Father got arrested for possession of child pornography. Complete surprise to everyone. My mother is a stay at home mother and has been for 33 years that they have been married. I work but don't make any real money. Any financial suggestions would be appreciated. Probably makes more sense reading it all.
A little about myself: I am 27 years old. I have two college degrees (Accounting and Business Finance). I'm currently self employed working on remodeling houses for family, friends, myself. I take IOUs from everyone, I haven't gotten actually paid in the 6 years I have been doing it. Started out me working on my parent's house in order to build my house, simply traded my labor for building supplies for my house. My house is on the same property as my parents so I guess you could say I kind of live with my parents? Other than a couple of small school loans (I lived at home and received a lot of scholarships) I'm debt free and have outstanding credit. I have a couple credit cards and treatment them like debt cards. One of my cards has a 14k credit line, why a bank would give someone with no income that high of a credit line is beyond me but it is what it is.
My sister is a ER doctor and we live right next to the hospital but she currently has one year of residency left. She decided to purchase a house within a 10 minute walk from my parent's house for when she gets done with residency. She didn't have a pile of money laying around so my Grandfather sold his condo to pay for half of the house and he is moving in with her.
I have a brother that's in college that lives in my parent's house, and a sister that's working on her master's that lives with my grandfather to take care of him.
If you're following: I have my house which is 1200 square ft (I live in), Parent's house which is 2600 square ft(Mother and Brother lives in), and Sister's/Grandfather's which is 5000 square ft(My younger sister also lives there).
My mother has been a stay at home mom since my father got his job 30 years ago. He made good money where we didn't have to worry. I'm a minimalist in a way. When I graduated college I realized my time and family is more valuable to me than getting a "real" job that pays six figures. We never hurt for money my dad made plenty and it was always a fair trade on my labor vs. The building supplies for my house. I spend less than 5 dollars a day on food since we have family night dinner every night and for lunch I usually make a sandwich. I technically don't own a car but I have my Grandfather's truck I received when I turned 16, it's a 1998 F-150 with 70K miles. I wouldn't trade it for the world and I will drive it until it dies.
All in all I am self sufficient. I remodel for 6 hours everyday and take care of my family for the rest. I enjoy videogames and spend all my free time on that. Haha A Xbox, TV, and Overwatch costing me 500 dollars total has kept me busy for 600 hours. I'm very frugal and don't buy anything really.
My mother never leaves the house. Her van hasn't started in over half a year and really hasn't affected her. She hasn't slept outside of her house in 15 years. I don't want to lose the house for her, I've spent my time fixing it up for her. I do everything I can to keep my family together, part of the reason why I haven't gotten a "real" job. My time is best suited taking care of her but that's a long story.
From what I hear we have expenses of 5,000 a month for just my parents. Hospital bills, School Loans, Credit Cards, House Payment, Father's car, Food. My grandfather and older sister are stretched thin on their new house. If we can make it another year my sister will be able to help us with her new income because she owes my parents (school loans) and me (house remodeling) a lot.
We have zero income right now but my father is out of jail and looking for a job. I hope he is able to find one but I don't know how that will work with a background check. I've considered getting a paying job but I'm not sure if I can find one in time that pays enough and then there's no one to work on my sister's house. It's an old house from the 50's, I stripped everything out and I've only have one working toilet in the place with no sinks, no kitchen yet. Just two bedrooms that are bare but livable. Living so close and being able to share my parent's house was all part of the plan.
I don't know if Bankruptcy is a way to refinance and keep us a float for a year. We have extended family and friends where we might be able to borrow from.
It's a tough situation and I know I didn't explain it all very well but if you have any advice or suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.
