A n00b wonders: is it possible to find out the exact composition of a fund? Fund research tools I've used so far (not many, to be honest) shows "top 10 equities" that form a fund. But is it public as to how much of what shares the fund manager had purchased?

Part of me tells me that, well, if it's public, then what stops me from copying that composition, and investing myself, thereby saving the "fund management charges"? The other part me tells me that, if it's being invested equities of registered companies, that has to be reflected somewhere public. So which is it; or neither?
