I used to be really good with money, totally fucked over my financial life due to a girl....and i've slowly been building myself back up.
Anyway this particular bank I owed 450 too. I independently paid this down to 200 and left it that way for a few months while I waited for my electricity security deposit to come back to me (after making 12 on time payments) The check showed up in the mail a few days ago for $433 ish and so I was able to deposit it into the savings account I still had with that bank, pay off the closed account, open up a checking and put $100 into each of them to act as a cushion! This is something i've wanted to do for a long time, and I plan on contributing $50 a month into the checking/savings to continually expand the safety net.
It's nice to have the peace of mind, and to know I would be ok if I had an emergency like a blown tire, home repair etc.
