I currently make $30,000 a year, I'm about to get a raise to $42,000 a year. I have Aetna Gold health insurance through my employer, I believe it's around $3,000 a year but I don't know the exact number. I know that now, after taxes and health insurance, I bring home $19,000-21,000 a year. I will be in a higher tax bracket after my raise, which bumps me from the 17% I currently pay to the 25% bracket. I don't know what I will have each month leftover.
Also, I'm moving in a month or so, looking to rent a 3 BR, 2 BA townhouse with some friends. Currently, my budget is $450 a month but I don't know what my budget will be after the raise.
I've heard it should be 1/3 of your gross salary, but $830 now and $1,100 later seems really high. I can't imagine giving up an entire paycheck to rent and not starving. I have a $400 car payment that I'm looking to get refinanced, $110 for car insurance, $90 for my phone, $100 towards student loans. My expenses look like so little but feel like so much and I don't know what to do.
Edit: Right now, each paycheck is $800, so 1/3 of my gross is now 1/2 of my net. Also, I live in Northern Virginia.
