I'm American and have been living overseas for the last several years. I have one derogatory remark on my credit history but have no debt other than student loans which have been consolidated into one account. I've been watching credit karma and according to that my credit score has been around 715 and I haven't been doing anything to try to get it higher. Today I get an email from credit karma saying my score went down, so I check and see that 9 student loan accounts were consolidated in 2007 and have just been removed from my credit history so my equifax score has dropped to 628 and my transunion is at 693.
I read the stuff on credit karma and they say that accounts can be removed after 10 years but in most cases it shouldn't affect your credit score too much. As I sit looking at a close to 90 point drop on one agency, I'm wondering if I'm just an exceptional case? Also does anyone have advice on the best way to increase credit overseas? I can get a credit card, but with this new score it may have to be secured? But I don't have any US $$ coming into an account so I would have to be able to easily, and cheaply, pay the balance with foreign currency. Are there any good solutions for this?
