Hey All,
Just wanted to share my experience with Patagonias customer service team--and contrast that with SmartWools.
I purchased a bunch of winter gear about 18 months--most of it being wool baselayers. Had 1 Patagonia Baselayer Leggings + 1 SmartWool Baselayer Leggings + 2 SmartWool Baselayer Long-Sleeve Shirts.
I added these to my current list of rotating clothing. I rotated wearing them, washed them in cold water, and air dried them.
About a month ago I noticed that the Patagonia baselayer Leggings had a hole near the groin, and that the SmartWool baselayers had holes at the elbows for the long sleeve shirts.
On May 10th I shipped them all out on the same day.
With Patagonia: Within a few days I had a gift card for the original amount. I ordered replacement clothing and had my new clothes to me by May 18th. This is a fantastic customer service experience. The quick turn around was appreciated and will definitely move me towards buying more of their clothing.
With SmartWool: A poor experience. Have not heard anything yet and this just contributes to my continued poor experience with them. They did not even send an email confirmation confirming they received the clothing. If I have to call and inquire, I will definitely be disappointed.
I would add, these clothing lasting only about ~18 months was a disappointing thing. Definitely not "BIFL," but I still consider them better than most other.
TL/DR: Patagonia Good, SmartWool Mediocore.
