Working on doing some remodelling in an older (1950s-'60s era) house. The owner likes the kitchen wall/backsplash tile, which is in pretty good shape (besides needing to be cleaned from a few decades' worth of smoke residue). The grout seems to be in ok shape (very little cracking/crumbling), but is obviously discolored and stained, and because it's about 50 sq. ft (est.) of approximately 1" square tiles, that's a LOT of grout work we're talking about. Consequently, I'm wondering how best to proceed, and have a few related questions.1) Any specific recommendations for cleaning smoke/nicotine residue from tile?2) I've seen various products for cleaning grout, all with mixed reviews. Does anyone have any specific recommendations for grout cleaning products, or should I just remove and replace the grout?3) If the grout doesn't seem to be in bad shape, can I just scrape off maybe 1/8" and add fresh grout on top? Or should I scrape out all the grout (all the way down to the drywall) and re-grout everything fresh?I've done a lot of googling, but unfortunately I'm getting mixed results, and I don't want to spend a lot of time and effort on an approach that is unsound or doomed to fail.Any suggestions or advice from more experienced DIYers would be greatly appreciated. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2pmfPmg
