Good day /r/personalfinance

I recently hired an employee who was out of work for a while. I know a few details about her and her husband's financial situation but I really try not to pry. As I was walking through her area, I overheard a VM message where a payday loan company was hounding her for payment.

I know how bad payday loans can be. I have personally never used them but used to do secret shopping to evaluate them and they can be downright nasty. Let alone payday loan interest is WAY too high. (John Oliver did a great piece on it, but you probably already know it.)

Anyway, that aside, I hate the fact that she's having difficulty getting back on her feet. When I hired her, I did know she was out of work for a while but didn't know her financial situation. I'm in a bad spot from an HR standpoint because I can't show favoritism.

Unfortunately, things I could do for her I can't:

  • Advance on her paycheck requires at least 6 months of employment (her probationary period)
  • She's salary so no over time

My wife and I have thought about sending a money order anonymously but we're not sure if this is the best way to do things since she's an employee. We have done this for friends and neighbors and feel a bit weird doing it for someone who reports to me.

What other ways, officially or unofficially, can I help?
