Hello PF,
TL;DR: I have a Roth IRA with Schwab, and one with the TSP. I'm unsure of how to manage both.
From 2008-2015, I had been contributing income to a Schwab IRA, managed by an accountant/family friend. After enlisting in the military in 2015, I broke with the accountant and my Schwab fund was just sitting stagnant. In 2016 I changed that, and moved funds into a target retirement fund.
Unfortunately I have not been contributing to my Schwab since 2015, as I have been making contributions to my TSP.
Here is my question: How should I go about managing these accounts? Try to split investments between the two? Consolidate to one account? As far as I know, I am unable to simply roll my Schwab assets into my TSP account, or vice versa.
I love the TSP, because it's extremely cheap to manage, easy to contribute to, and very simple. It also has good historical performance, and is exclusive to my career.
On the other hand, Schwab offers many more options on investments, handled by a reputable company. It is more expensive to manage, unfortunately.
My Schwab account is around $18,000, no active contributions. My TSP account is at $18,000, investing about $960/month.
For what it's worth, I'm 26 years old. Let me know if you need more information.
Edit: Thanks for the feedback so far, good stuff! For the record, I have a Roth IRA with Schwab, and a Roth TSP.
