It seems that of those thermometers which aren't drop-resistant (where the internal electronics don't break the first time you drop them — which are the minority), the others have a probe where the metal part of the probe comes loose from the wire after a period of time due to the necessity of having the part of the wire nearest the probe inside the oven (when, for example, cooking a roast for half an hour to a few hours). Since I doubt there is a buy-it-for-life solution that is more convenient than the old-fashioned dial-and-probe mechanical thermometers of the previous century, what have you folks found in terms of a solution that is both long-lasting and convenient, i.e., good value for the money you spent in the long haul?
