I've always been fascinated by the concept of simple living. I'm a minimalist. I love making do with less, not more. I say this just to set the table. I quit a high paying job in retail management (at least for my area) in order to pursue a career as a freelance writer.

Flash forward three years later and I'm still going strong. I make enough to get by and have a little bit of fun. My days are my own, I don't have any individual boss, and I have freedom to pursue pretty much anything I want. But here's the rub... I feel like working in this job has changed me.

Working on the internet, for my clients, has pretty much changed how my mind works. Before I worked solely on the internet I was pretty disciplined and pretty focused on the task at hand. Now I'm spending 10 to 12 hours at my desk writing and it is so easy for me to go off track. Take right now for example: I should be working on an assignment but it's just so easy to toggle over to Reddit and distract myself.

Working on the internet, where I can access whatever i want and whenever I want it, has destroyed my ability to focus and stay in the moment. I don't have ADD or anything, at least I don't think, and I don't believe I'm lazy but.. this is a problem for me. If I cut out all of those distracting hours online I'd be making more money in less time and probably happier for it.

Does anyone here work solely on the internet? Have you come across this same problem?

edit: I should say that I DO go to the gym to break up my day before that is suggested.
