I'm looking for more hands-on hobbies that cost a little bit up-front but result in saving money later. Ideally this would require a little maintenance work. I'm just looking for ways to keep busy, feel productive, and not spend too much money. I'd like to be more dependent on myself and less on consumer goods.

So far I've been thinking of learning how to homebrew (I love a good beer!), maybe growing some herbs or plants. I've also toyed around with the idea of buying an old cheap beater bike, learning how to fix it up, then having a new sustainable source of transportation!

What do you guys do that fall under this? At some point I'd also like to learn some basic carpentry but that's probably too high of a cost for me right now.
