I had a job interview with a new company today that went very well. On the way home I got a phone call from someone in HR with a verbal offer (she called it a soft offer) for 50k. Based off of some individuals I know who work in this role currently, I was expecting 45k, so I said yes. She said she would have to get it approved by some people and that she was not sure exactly how long it would take, but she mentioned that it would be approved, just unsure of when.
A few hours later, the same lady called back and said that after she talked more with the hiring manager and the powers that be, that based off of my experience and qualifications, that 50k was too high, and that if she did try and send that number to be approved, that they would reject it. She said she wanted to make sure I did get the job (seems to allude that if an offer is given too high, the company might change their mind altogether? This part really confuses me), so she asked what my current salary is (32.1k) and then said: "Wow, thats a big jump", and asked if I would accept 40k. I said yes, and she said she will be in touch later this week.
It appears that this lady from HR was not on the same page as the rest of those in charge; is this something that happens often? Anyways, my main question is, do I have any room to possibly ask for more in the range I was looking for, around 45k, since they started at 50k? I understand that I did accept the lower offer and that nothing is official until it is on paper, I just want to make sure that I do the right thing from here on out.
I also want to note that the most important thing to me is getting out of my current job, so 40k is still great for my current stage of life, and I will be happy with it. I am just upset with being teased about potentionally making over 50% more than I am currently.
