I basically wanted to post this as inspiration to those of you starting out. Some of this is luck and family gifts, but I still had the choice to save or not and I did.
When I was 22 I saved up about 10,000 blew it all on living when I got laid off work.
I got back into the work force when I was 23 after blowing it all. I've only been making 15-19 an hour and living in Seattle where a 1 BR currently goes for about $900-$1400 per month.
I started packing away every gift I got, every bonus, and trying to be more frugal. At bare minimum I have a large 401k addition with each check and $20 into my index fund.
Instead of ordering pizza or drinking, or buying stupid stuff I put money away into my ROTH or VTSAX.
Currently here's where I stand.
$13,198 in VTSAX
$18,287 in VHDYX (roth IRA)
401k (20% of each paycheck with a very large match, and I will roll this over into my ROTH eventually)
$11,031 in FSITX
$4364 in FSITX
Other: 500 oz of silver ($8,900 ish)
26 Bitcoin $33,462 today
$3,500 in Robinhood
This does not take into account my limited physical possessions/car etc.
I have no debt other than my monthly credit card bill which always gets paid off.
I got lucky that Bitcoin is doing well and index funds have worked well for me.
I put a lot away into retirement and I've had some family help here and there. I've just made saving for my future my full time hobby. I don't drink and I don't go out much anymore unless it's free/cheap.
Next time you're feeling down and feeling like you can't save for your future think of my story.
Next goal is 100k, and from there 200k.
My primary goal is to get to 300k in my taxable account and start cutting back my working hours and living off the earnings from that.
