Gallery of images here: http://ift.tt/2mtsEx2've just purchased a 1930's farmhouse in Ontario, Canada - I am going to be doing a fairly extensive renovation cosmetically to the house, but the basement is a 5ft dirt floor area with limited functionality so I'm not planning to make it into a livable space. There are a few issues down there that I want to address and would appreciate any practical advice thereon:1. The posts in the middle of the basement which support the floor above it are functionally useless at this point - it seems that the dirt which supports the base of the posts has compressed and so they aren't really supporting anything. I was thinking that the best fix would be to dig a concrete footing a few feet down and put new supports on top and then jack things up to fix the deflection in the rooms above - any thoughts/experience with that out there?2. The floor of the basement is dirt, with a layer of stone above it - its dirty and the damp comes through it pretty liberally - would it be a good idea to have a 2-3" slab poured to clean things up?3. Walls - the stone foundation seems to be in good shape. I was thinking that I'd give it a once over with some mortar to fill in any cracks/voids that I see. It also seems to have picked up years of dirt - what would be the best way to "clean" the walls - i.e. could I hose them down and scrub?Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2me5ZEF
