My uncle had a black walnut tree cut down in his front yard in the early 90's, he had it milled and stored in the crawl space of our family's vacation home. I remember him showing it to me when I was younger but I had completely forgotten about it. While working on the home this past winter, I rediscovered the wood and took it back home to our shop. My younger brother recently got married and he and his wife wanted a live edge table for their new home. Since it wasn't an enormous amount of wood, we decide to make a sofa table. Heres how it turned out...http://ift.tt/2n64Fjk running the cut edge on the joiner, absolutely gorgeous wood. Black walnut is very hard and has a very sweat smell, almost like potpourri.http://ift.tt/2nUcLQw joined two slabs with wood glue and claps, it helps to use strips of plywood on the outside of the live edge. I also had to keep my width under 16 inches because thats how wide our planner is.http://ift.tt/2n69SYt notched the underside of the top for the legs to sit in. I then took my scraps and made the lower shelve. I then wood glued and nailed everything and put weight on it while the glue dried over night.http://ift.tt/2nU1aB7 the glue dried and put a few more finishing nails in, applied a little bit of dark red bondo to cover my nail holes. Then sanded the whole table with 80, 100, 120 grit sand paper. Then I sprayed it with lacquer sanding sealer, twice. Sanded it with sanding pads and gave it a final coat with dull clear lacquer.http://ift.tt/2n65BnR finished product, Im proud to say they are very happy.http://ift.tt/2nU8Wet via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2nCeCck
