I got a job at a restaurant starting as part time. I used to work there, but quit a while back to get a different job. They were glad to have me back. I asked for 2-4 days a week at first, because of my schedule. I told her in the coming months I would be free to work more. She said that would work fine, as hours were a little tight.
She put me on for 2 days. Okay, sure.
A couple of months later, my schedule is freed up, and I talked to the kitchen manager and the main manager about getting more hours. They said they'd talk to the owner. A couple weeks go by, and I still have two shifts. I am unable to speak with the owner as I have only seen her 1-2 times after the interview, because she tends to come in on days I don't work. I didn't know who to talk to.
She hired on another cook shortly after.
Flash forward to Christmas, she gave me $25 as a bonus, and announced to the staff that she will have to cut hours due to labor costs. Okay.. sure.
I come in the next day to find I am now only scheduled 5 hours a week. A drop from the 14-16 I was working. I asked the manager about it, and he said he'd ask the owner. I haven't heard anything back.
Then yesterday, I came in to find out that ALL of my hours have been cut, and I am now "on call".
I don't know what I can do. I've been looking for other jobs, but since I'm moving in May for this programming job, not a lot of places want to hire for two months. I live in a small town, so my options are limited.
My dad suggested to try and contact the department of labor, and see what I could do for short term unemployment. But I'm not entirely sure how all of that works.
Any advice?
