I'd like to take a moment to honor Suzy, my 2003 Grand Am. We traveled 66k miles across the country over 6 fun and eventful years. She represents the adventures of my 20's. Suzy is now living out her golden years as the 1st car of my neighbor's son, who takes his drivers test with her this week. God speed old friend.
Here is a detailed list of all the costs associated with owning Suzy. I bought her for $7100, spent $6k in maintenance and repairs (including oil changes), and I estimate I spent about $8k in gasoline (assumed $3/gallon fuel price and 25 MPG). I sold her this week for $1200, bringing down the estimated total cost of ownership to just under $20k, or $300/mo.
For my next car I plan on saving all the receipts and sharing the exact cost of ownership with no estimates.
