I see people often wondering about cheaper phone plans, so I just want to throw a quick bit of info to make life with you phones easier.
Google Hangouts/Google Voice
This is the secret to it all. When you setup google voice you pick a google voice number, this number can be used like a normal phone number, with one or two little amazing features...
- 1) You recieve the txt/call on ALL devices you have hangouts downloaded to, any phone, tablet, or even your computer.
- 2) Its free, has free voice mail, has free video chat, cheap international calling
This alone changes how most of us deal with phone plans. No more worrying about changing numbers, free wifi calling and texting, requires very little data to use over data plan, and works across multiple devices.
If you only want a home phone(s) or use your phone in a city or place with free wifi everywhere, then you dont need any carrier or phone plan at all. You can set this up on an old phone, or a tablet and have a working phone number at home, or anywhere with wifi.
This isnt to replace your phone plan, so much as to show you dont need much of a phone plan.
I personally use freedompop's free plan, with 200mb of data (which is about 500mb or more with friends feature of freedompop). This means I have 0$ a month for my phone plan, which works without wifi over data.

For reference...
A 1/2 hour phone call will use about 25mb.
A 1/2 hour video call will use about 300mb.
A single txt message will use about 1kb.
