Hey guys, I was living in Houston about six months ago. I was renting an apartment over there and had to move back to Florida for school. They charged me a cancellation fee and made me pay the month I was living there, which wasn't something I was happy to do but it is what it is. At the time they were bought out by a new company and were only taking money orders.

So, I paid it. Months later I'm getting calls from collections saying I owe a large sum of money I never paid for. They said I moved out of the apartment a month and a half AFTER I legitimately moved out. Unfortunately, I don't have the receipt, and it was lost in the move back to FL. I understand how much this screws me.

When I talked to the apt., they said all employees there before had been gone, so no credible source. Also, I'm not sure if they still have my file there, or if they keep transaction history. The new manager is currently looking for "old tenant files in another building." The only "proof" I have is my cancellation letter I sent in a month prior, giving them notice to my leave. This kills my credit and I'm very young, and they also put a rental ban on my credit. Please give me some advice guys, I'm not sure what to do.

Edit: Not sure why I'm being downvoted?
