The title says it all. I graduated from my university (in Missouri) in 2010. I received a diploma, which IMO is the ultimate sign from a University that you no longer owe them money. Today I received a letter from the MO DoR stating that the University now participates in the Debt Offset Program and intercepted my measly state return of $41 to pay towards a balance of $5974.52 that I owe to the University.
Like I said in the title, the university has never once called/mailed/emailed me to collect this debt in almost 7 years. I pay very close attention to my credit and there is nothing on my credit report reflecting this debt. I have never been contacted by a debt collector.
This is concerning to me because:
- I am currently pre-approved for my first home loan and am under contract to buy a house currently under construction.
- I don't want to pay my university $6k that I don't believe I owe them.
- I want my $41.
The letter states that I can file a written dispute requesting a hearing on the offset. Do I have other options? Is there not a statute of limitations on something like this?
EDIT: The University Cashier's office was closed when I got home, so I'll have to wait to contact them.
Even if there is a statute of limitations, I assume the University will always hold this debt against me. I wouldn't be able to get transcripts or take classes, but I have a great job in a field unrelated to my degree so I don't see myself needing transcripts.
Is it possible for me to just eat this $41 and just withhold more in the future as a way around this?
