Hello, /r/pf,

I'm in my early 30s, no debt, and single. I save more than 50% of my take home pay, around 36-40% of my gross pay. Part of this goes into retirement savings and part goes into a personal investments account. I've successfully avoided lifestyle creep so that at this point I'm basically living like someone earning half of my salary without feeling like I'm missing out on much. I still go out to eat from time to time, participate in hobbies, travel, and live a pretty damn good life.

Here's my concern. I have no idea if I'll ever end up ever getting married, having a family, or buying a house. I just don't know. Every financial guide I've read goes into great details about mortgages and marriage and saving for children's education. I am not in a relationship and have no reason to think I will be in the future, but it's something I would like if the right person came along. My question is, how do I plan for this? Should I be putting some money in a 529 in case I do have a kid? It seems very hard to predict my expenses given the uncertainty and I would feel silly if I set side a portion of my savings for a hypothetical family that I never end up having. I haven't seen this covered anywhere so forgive me if this seems really obvious.

Thanks for any advise/wisdom you can share!
