I'm posting here because all of the advice I've gotten or read on here is a limited option for me. The graduate programs I have applied to are in speech-language pathology. I hear back soon, and I seem to have a decent chance of getting in from everything I've heard.

Some tricky factors:

  1. I have been told to apply to a public college. My state has only two graduate programs in speech language pathology (technically three, but one is not accredited). The nearest one is an hour away from me, and the other one is almost two hours away. I have applied to the one two hours away, and if they give me enough money, I'll go there. It'll suck, but I'll make it work. I live with my boyfriend, and we can't move because of his job. Because they're so cheap compared to everything else, these programs are also both highly competitive (and as anyone familiar with the field knows, any grad program is highly competitive to begin with).

  2. I have been advised to work or to have a job that pays for it. I work as a CNA, and I will certainly continue working per diem, but from what everyone has told me, it is very hard to work during a speech pathology grad program. The coursework is extremely difficult and the clinical practicum can potentially take up as much time as a part time job. I know working nights full time is an option, but I don't know if I have the constitution for that. Sorry if that makes me sound lazy.

  3. There is a possibility that I'll get a research assistant or teaching assistant position. However, it's like winning the lottery. The average grad program gets a 200-500 applicants, accepts around 100, and 20-30 of those people get teaching assistant or research assistant positions.

  4. Most grad programs do not allow someone to be enrolled part time; none of the ones I have applied to do.

  5. A program typically involves summer classes, so working during the summer is difficult as well.

tl;dr I'm hoping to go to grad school for speech language pathology. Working is difficult or impossible during the program, assistantships are limited, state universities are far away from me, and the only financial aid for grad students seems to be loans.

Thanks in advance, PF!
