A recent letter from my work 401k contained investment performance information as of 12/31/16 for several funds. I'm only focussing on vanguard funds as their expense ratio is the lowest of all. I am particularly interested in Vanguard 500 index FD admiral (VFIAX), Vanguard MidCap index (VIMSX) & Vanguard Small cap index (NAESX). The expense ratio is .05, .20 & .20 respectively. The YTD return is 11.93, 11.07 & 18.17 respectively. Doesn't it make sense to invest in Vanguard small cap index - 18.17 % YTD return and .20 expense ratio? Am i missing something here?
