Hi /r/Frugal! I'm looking at heading overseas for my big OE in the middle of this year (I live in New Zealand).
I have stuff, not a lot of it, but a fair bit. I live with a group of others so only really own whats in my bedroom and a few things in the kitchen, no couches etc to worry about.
My question is to those of you that have done this before, what is worth holding onto for when you come back? Some things? Absolutely nothing? Anything I do wish to keep can be stored at my parents, any thing I don't want to hold onto I'll sell or donate.
I've listed below what I have.
Kitchen
- Electric mixer
- Dinner plates
- Bread and butter plates
- Set of cereal bowls
- Set of mixing bowls with lids
- Measuring cups, spoons etc
- A few ovenware/bakeware items
- Rice cooker
- Toaster
- Several chopping boards
- A couple of mugs
- Several glass tumblers
- Frying pans
- Pots
Bedroom
- Bed (this is only a few years old and was bought new, will be going into the spare room at my parents to replace my old childhood bed)
- Dresser
- Two bedside tables
- Chair
- Stool
- Small folding table
- Sewing machine (pretty set on keeping this, its a nice Bernina)
- Hair dryer/straighter
- Books
- 2 suitcases
- Posters/art prints
- A few other nic nacs
I'll keep the bed, any clothes I do not want to get rid off but don't want to take overseas (at least initially) plus a few sentimental items I don't want to part with. Also my cast iron frying pan isn't leaving my possession until I'm dead.
I'll also be selling my car.
Is it worth having any of this to come back to? I plan to visit the States/Canada for several months before traveling to Europe. I'll have a 2 year UK work/tourist visa, and will spend as much time as I can visiting other European countries. All going well, I'm probably going to be away 2.5 years.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate your time.
