About a year ago, I started a part time job with a friend. I know, first mistake. The idea was that I'd work part time for her on weekends and as available. About 2 months in (8 actual working days) I started to ask when I'd get paid, and she paid me $80 for the first day I worked with them. After that, each weekend, there was an excuse as to why there wasn't a check. At first, I bought them, then I started seeing through her. In June, she asked me to go full time with the company, and I told her I wasn't willing to do so until I got paid for the hours worked. Her response was along the lines of, "What, I thought accounting got that taken care of months ago!"
Long story short, the e-mail account where I was tracking my hours got deleted (off of her company's e-mail server, of course) and at this point I really don't know how much she owes me. I think it's around $400. In September, we agreed to meet so she could give me a check, I waited for 3 hours and she didn't show up. Her son finally came, but he had no idea that I was there or that I hadn't been paid.
Now, she's not responding to FB messages and she's changed her phone number. $400 would be sweet, but I'm solid financially and I'm not going to be ruined without it. Do I chalk this up to a bad learning experience and let it go, or try to get the cash out of her? I don't have any solid proof of the hours I worked, as she deleted them in the e-mail account I had with the company. The only real path forward that I can come up with is causing a stink with her main client (who I know and do have a decent reputation with) to let them know about her shady business practices, but I don't know if it's worth the effort.
TL;DR: Took a job with a friend and she never paid me. Is it worth pursuing or did I just make a $400 mistake?
