Note: I have read the backpack thread from the sidebar series and have also searched this sub. However, I still couldn't find that "unicorn" backpack for myself.

Seeing as I'm about to head back to college, I'm back in the market for a new backpack. I was handed a Samsonite backpack in my freshman year that left a lot to be desired (specifically the overall capacity that doesn't allow much beyond a few small books, a laptop and its power brick).

What am I looking for this time? Well, I hope that I could fit the following items without the backpack noticeably bulges out:

  • 15.6" laptop and its power brick (not MBP; about 1 inch thick)
  • Books with the combined depth of around 2 to 2.5 inches
  • My headphone carry case, around 2 inches thick
  • Not a big fan of small pockets everywhere, but having mesh side pockets for umbrella/water bottle is pretty nice

So far, I have checked out:

  • Goruck GR1 - Looks really nice, but very pricey. I couldn't find a comparison video between the 21L and the 26L version, so I'm not sure which one would suit me better. I also saw a recent thread about how their customer service department is going downhill a bit, quality wise. It's quite a bit of a turn off for a $300 backpack.
  • Osprey - So many models, I'm just lost at this point.
  • Victorinox - this is the one I was looking at. However its main compartment looks to be even smaller than my Samsonite.
  • Tom Bihn - Same problem as Osprey.

I'd appreciate any additional inputs or comments on these backpacks, in an effort to help me figure out my unicorn backpack.

I also am looking for a bifold wallet. Two main requirements:

  • Thin profile - I usually wear skinny jeans, and my current wallet sticks out like a sore thumb, not to mention how uncomfortable it is when I sit.
  • Will fit wider bills like Japanese Yen

The only reasonable recommendation I've found is to head over to /r/LeatherClassifieds and find someone to custom-make you one. I went there and the sub looked pretty dead, so I'm not sure if anyone would respond to my request there.

As for the budget for both items, as long as the price can be reasonably justified, it's unlimited. Thank you again everyone!
