My girlfriends parents won't file their taxes because they owe so much for putting them off (over $12,000). She was allowed to receive financial aid for the first semester of her 2016-2017 school year because her parents had an extension on their taxes. But now they have to file them in order of her to receive aid for the second semester and they won't do it. You can't file as an independent unless you are 24 years or older for FAFSA and her parents help in no way with rent, books etc. Her grandparents paid for her tuition but she needs the financial aid refund in order to pay rent and make car payments. Her parents would rather go to prison than pay in for taxes so it is unlikely that they will get them filed by the end of the month when her payments are due. Is there anything she can do?
