Ok so going to the movies isn't super frugal but I've combined discounts in my situation to bring the cost way down.
My wife and I enjoy going to the movies about once a week. This used to cost around $25 or so until we found a few ways to bring it down.
First we started going to an older theater closer to home. This brought the price way down as we were driving 20+ miles to a nicer theater and paying about $12 a ticket. The main difference in these theaters is you get to pick your seats at the nicer one.
Then we found out AT&T offers a Two for Tuesday movie tickets deal if you are a U.S. wireless customer. This deal isn't worth joining AT&T for but if you already have service through them, check it out. It's a little bit of a hassle to get the tickets, I have to log into two different sites, get a text, and enter a membership code to complete the process but in the end it's a two for one deal.
The second savings was a bit of a suprise for me, around Christmas time we purchased an AMC Premiere membership for $15. I figured this was going to be somewhat of a wash as I purchased it because it removes any fees for online ticket purchases. I immediately got $10 in credit on it to use for movies or snacks and we get full points on it for the two for Tuesday deal through AT&T. So we've been getting about $5 in credit a week plus avoiding $3-6 dollars in fees everytime we buy tickets online.
Overall in the last month or so we've gotten around $40 in credits and saved about that much in fees from the AMC deal.
By combining these two programs, our total cost for seeing a movie is about $4.25 a week (our theater has a cheap price Tuesday deal) and we get about $5 in AMC credit for doing so.
