Hi frugal, apologies if this is the wrong sub, I tried looking around but /r/medicaid gets almost no traffic and this is pretty time sensitive.

My niece is an adult (over 21) but her mom still claims her as a dependent for various reasons, a big one being she's housebound. The household is pretty desperately poor. Recently she had a hospital visit, and beyond that she REALLY needs some health and mental health services really badly or she'll never recover.

I'm planning to go to a place that can help her through the paperwork, but her mom mentioned that maybe the tax dependent status could be a problem? I know they both have no coverage. Her mom may well just be because she's a total clusterfuck, I'm not sure the household makes enough money to disqualify the mom. Niece can't really work and, as I said, is an adult.

Sorry for the confusion, I'm really confused, and need to get her coverage ASAP and not deal with denials if possible. Thanks for any help.
