Hello, /r/personalfinance, I am a practicing family medicine doc. I am very fortunate to do what I do. I love my job. I am so lucky to stand in the face of disease and care of those in need. If I could live on nothing, I would do my job for free, because I seriously, really, truly, love it. I have been medically trained by the American medical system and I can say, and predict, that most physicians understand nothing of your financial situation. I think it is imperative that you know this if you want to seek medical care in America. We look at disease, not dollars. I make decisions based solely on medical necessity. I make no money on the tests I order, yet you may stand to lose a LOT based on what I order. Please, let this be a PSA thread for all Americans. Empower yourself by ensuring your own doctor can explain the why and how of the tests/ studies they order. Sincerely, just some unknown doc from the U.P.
