Hello peeps. This is my first time posting in the personalfinance.
Backstory I will keep it short. I am 31. At 23 I met my long-time fiancee (but never husband) at 18 and we moved in together (we were both in university). Electrical Engineer, makes good money, always suspected he had mild autism or OCD. I had an inheritance of about 100k and mostly lived off that and worked part time.
Fast forward 8 years. I am now living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and invested 20k of my savings (of 30k left or so) into our home and not long after, my fiancee explains he thinks we should live separately. I won't get into the nuanced reasons for this, but after being upset for a few days I am actually feeling rather relieved and looking forward to living on my own. This was 6 days ago now.
Primary Income/Business
I also started a Managed IT company about one year ago and am now making between 2-3k/mo before ANY taxes so take out roughly income tax and self employment tax at 30%. Much of this income is contractual with my clients so should be fairly steady and gradually increasing. I network heavily each week to get new clients.
Savings
I also have around 6k in US Savings Bonds from 1985 to 1990--which have more than doubled and now have fully matured but I haven't cashed them. My last calculation of all of them a year ago put them at around 19k.
My ex-fiancee will also be providing me within a few days a check equal to what I have put into the house, which is 20k. Assuming the 1k I put in before as rent.
Debt
I have no debts in the form of credit cards, student loans, car notes, or otherwise.
Housing
My first mistake maybe I'm already about to lease an apt that is nearing $900 (gas/water/trash/pest control included). Gated community in a middle-class to upper-middle class area, where several of my clients live so it benefits my response time for my business.
Other Income/Thoughts
I make additional income in tips/donations via my twitch.tv livestreams (twitch.tv/syntria). Avging $50-$200/mo. I plan to work on an actual 'work' schedule for streaming to try to get that smoothed out to $200/mo. I know this is a bit of a crap shoot.
I am honestly just so floored about this separation, even though I think it was for the best in hindsight. Before I put a flat $1000 into our joint account and everything else I made was personal gravy for me. What can I say, I have been spoiled. He is strongly encouraging me to move out quickly but I also don't want to make a bad decision since I have never truly lived on my own before.
I have been spending the last several hours reading various threads here looking to gather wisdom for the months to come. I wanted to put my situation out there to see what kind of feedback or guidance I could get.
