I will be spending six months in the US (DC metro-ish) and will during this time be paid $7000 net of taxes per month before going back to my own country. I will also go with my wife who will not be employed. What are some things I need to think about in terms of personal finance?

(1) Rent. I have looked at six-month leases and they seem to be around $2300 per month excluding utilities. (a) Does this seem reasonable given my pay? (b) What would the average utility bill be of a 1br apartment? (c) Would it be a better idea to try to rent furnished, or should I look into buying some cheap furniture?

(2) Transportation. I plan to live somewhat close to my place of employment, but from prior experience living in the US I know that a car would nevertheless be useful. Would it be a better idea to buy a cheap used car or just use Uber/Lyft to get around? I'm guessing the former is more attractive from a financial point of view, but I'm worried about potential inconveniences (e.g., paperwork, buying, and especially selling the car once I leave).

(3) Health insurance. This is covered by my employer.

(4) Other expenses (food, cell plan, etc.). I have no idea how much this will run. We enjoy home cooking, but will also have a full schedule. Not interested in anything fancy, but would enjoy a nice salad/pasta for lunch.

(5) Other suggestions. Anything I should know?
