I wanted to ask folks' opinions about durable, stylish messenger bags which can hold a 15" laptop (in my case, a 2015 MacBook Pro) for a (walking) work commute. I currently carry a decade-old Crumpler Dreadful Embarassment—they no longer make them this big—which is a bit worn, and has no structural support without the laptop.
I personally prefer the look of messenger bags over briefcases and attaches; they tend to come in more designs and colors and I feel are more in-line with my workplace (a tech startup in San Francisco, I've been doing startups for a while). My price range is around $400; I'm finding at this price point, the quality of the leather and canvas seems to good enough that there's a reasonable chance the bag will last for a decade or more.
So far, I've narrowed down my choices to:
- Waterfield Cargo: Looks great, isn't too thick or heavy, awesome buckle, easy to adjust strap, slightly weird design choice with main flap only covering a small pocket (the main compartment is closed by a normal zipper).
- Pad & Quill Messenger Bag: Looks awesome, P&Q emphasizes craftsmanship, thicker and heavier than other bags, unsure of durability of the stud buckle design.
- Ruitertassen Vanquish Business Bag: Excellent Italian leather, classy look though a bit monochromatic, simple interior design (which is probably a minus for me).
The P&Q bag is recommended by a lot of tech accessories/gadget sites, whereas I found the Waterfield and Ruitertassen from various threads here in the past. Does anybody here own one of these bags? If so, how have they held up? Any regrets on the bags themselves, or a small detail that is either awesome or annoying? Thanks.
